WASHINGTON, D.C., October 8, 2009—The recent flurry of alleged terrorist plots has renewed concern that other attacks may be planned. Although the recent plots have involved explosive bombs, there is an even more ominous threat—biological weapons.

Ever since the WMD Commission issued its findings last year warning that a biological weapon was the one most likely to be wielded by terrorists, there has been a renewed emphasis on bio-defenses and programs. However, the difficulty in detecting biological agents remains an incredible hurdle to preventing a bioterror attack. Mitigating the threat of a biological attack requires a great deal of intelligence, expertise, and a well-resourced, rapid response.

In the October issue of Homeland Security Today, Washington Correspondent Mickey McCarter takes an in-depth look at the ways scientists and legislators are tackling the obstacles in the way of bio-security.
