U.S. Fire Administrator Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell joined Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and New York City Fire Museum’s FDNY 343 Memorial for the annual wreath-laying ceremony yesterday. The event honored the firefighters and first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
The FDNY 343 Memorial, built in 2002, was the first permanent tribute to the firefighters who gave their lives at the World Trade Center. Each year, the ceremony serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and heroism displayed by the FDNY and all first responders who rushed to save lives that day, even at the cost of their own.
During the ceremony, Secretary Mayorkas reflected on the enduring legacy of 9/11, emphasizing the sacrifices made not only on that day but in the years that followed. His message highlighted the importance of continuing the mission of securing the homeland and preventing terrorism, a mission driven by the dedication and resolve of DHS and its partners across the nation.
“Today, we pay special memory to the tragic terrorist attack on our nation 23 years ago, and we honor the thousands of lives lost on that day and in the ensuing days, weeks, months, and years.” said Secretary Mayorkas in a statement. “While the pain of 9/11 endures, our nation’s resolve does too. Each of you, in your dedication to our Department and its most fundamental mission of securing our homeland, embodies that resolve and gives it meaning and life every day. We have made tremendous strides in combating the persistent threat of terrorism that challenges our country and many others around the world. You have achieved that progress through your talent, creativity, tireless dedication, and sacrifice. Thank you.” He continued “Thank you for honoring the lives lost on and after 9/11. Thank you for everything you do in service of our nation.”
The wreath-laying ceremony stands as a tradition, ensuring that the memory of the 343 FDNY members and all other first responders who perished on 9/11 continues to be honored. Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell, alongside Secretary Mayorkas and Commissioner Tucker, represented the collective gratitude of the nation to those who serve and sacrifice to protect others.
As the nation reflects on the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, the event serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing commitment to homeland security and public safety. The legacy of those who perished continues to inspire the efforts of today’s emergency responders and security professionals.
