Rounds Nominated as Director of Office of Government Ethics

President Trump has nominated Emory Rounds as the new head of the Office of Government Ethics.

Rounds has served at the Office of Government Ethics since 2009, and he is currently an associate counsel. Prior to this he was an ethics counsel under former President George W Bush. He has also served in the Department of Commerce’s Ethics Office and spent 22 years in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps.

There was controversy for the OGE last year when previous director Walter Shaub resigned from his position over frustration that Trump decided not to divest from his businesses. Shaub has been vocal about his support for the nomination of Rounds, though, tweeting that the nominee “is a good and decent man who has devoted his life to public service.”

“He was Richard Painter’s right hand in the Bush White House,” Shaub said, referencing another Trump critic. “Emory will lead OGE ably. I hope the Senate confirms him quickly.”

The nomination also garnered support from Painter, who served as the chief ethics lawyer under Bush 43. “Emory Rounds is an excellent choice,” Painter tweeted. “Worked with him for 2 1/2 years on White House ethics. Very smart, no nonsense, plays by the rules, no politics.”
