Updates to the 2008 grant programs

On Feb. 1, after the 2008 Grants Guide went to press, the Department of Homeland Security announced changes to several of the most relevant homeland security grant programs. This addendum documents these changes and provides the most current information available.

Deadlines are subject to change, particularly for those programs that have not been formally announced as of the writing of this addendum. Other Changes in 2008:

  • Transit Security Grants have been renamed the Public Transportation Security Assistance Program, and the funding has more than doubled to $400 million, up from $175 million last year.
  • The Port Security Grants Program has also been increased to $400 million from $210 million last year.
  • Assistance to Firefighters Grant Programs have been restored to their 2004 peak of $750 million, up from $662 million last year.
  • Justice Assistance Grants have been reduced to $170 million from $416million last year.
  • Emergency Management Performance Grants have been increased from $200 million last year to $300 million.
  • The Public Safety Interoperable Communications program has been reformed and extended at least until 2012 in the Interoperable Emergency Communications Grant Program.
