New Guide Explains US Employment-Based Immigration System

A comprehensive guide to the US employment-based immigration system, Moving Forward on Immigration: How the US Employment-Based Immigration System Works – and How It Can Work Better, “lays out the elements of the current, outdated system and puts forward solutions supported by US employers to modernize it,” according to the Council for Global Immigration (CFGI) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).

“Our immigration system is complicated, inefficient and incompatible with the speed at which business moves and our ever-changing economy. We need to reform the employment-based immigration system so that it supports, not hinders, America’s employers,” said CFGI Executive Director Lynn Shotwell. “This guide is an ideal resource for anyone wanting to learn about our employment-based immigration system and serves policymakers and their staffs as they evaluate ways to reform it.”

The guide features a pullout poster of key immigration terms and federal agencies that help in understanding the complex US immigration system, as well as CFGI’s Principles for Immigration Reform that outline reforms endorsed by immigration professionals to ensure the US employment-based immigration system advances employers’ ability to recruit, hire, transfer and retaintop world talent.

It also contains:

  • An overview of the US employment-based immigration system;
  • Must-know information on the President’s executive action;
  • Details on the skills gap and why employment-based reforms are critical to addressing it;
  • Important policy solutions that can make the system work better – from H-1Bs to worksite enforcement;
  • Lessons from the global competition for talent; and more.

As part of the guide’s release, CFGI also has made video “starring a professional who faces new challenges when she is assigned employment-based immigration responsibilities for her organization,” the organization said.

The guide is being released at SHRM’s Employment Law & Legislative Conference this week in Washington, DC. Among the conference’s concurrent sessions is, “Moving Forward on Immigration: How the President’s Historic Actions Impact You,” with representatives of CFGI. During the conference, SHRM members will visit their legislators on Capitol Hill to talk about workplace issues, including the need to improve E-Verify.
