The FBI Agents Association hit back at President Trump for comments last week in which Trump alleged there was corruption tantamount to “cancer” at the Bureau and vowed to rid the FBI of “stench.”
In an interview with The Hill, Trump called the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s campaign influence operation a political “hoax.”
Asked what he thought could be the outcome of his fight with the FBI, the president replied, “I hope to be able put this up as one of my crowning achievements that I was able to … expose something that is truly a cancer in our country.”
The FBI Agents Association tweeted the next day, “FBI Special Agents work every day to protect our nation and constitution. Let’s talk about real cancer-cancers that have killed 15 FBI heroes who responded to the 9/11 terrorist attacks with more falling sick each year.”
At a Friday campaign rally in Missouri, Trump said, “Look what’s being exposed at the Department of Justice and the FBI. You have some real bad ones. You see what’s happening at the FBI — they’re all gone, they’re all gone.”
“But there’s a lingering stench, and we’re going to get rid of that too,” Trump added.
Tweeted the FBI Agents Association in response: “As we have said, attacks on our character and demeaning comments about the FBI will not deter Agents from continuing to do what we have always done—dedicate our lives to protecting the American people.”
The FBIAA linked to a December statement issued after another Trump attack, in which the association vowed, “Attacks on our character and demeaning comments about the FBI will not deter Agents from continuing to do what we have always done—dedicate our lives to protecting the American people.”
