DHS Releases New Information About Privacy Breach

DHS has released new information about the privacy breach on the DHS Inspector General’s database which affected almost 240,000 people.

The breach occurred in 2017 when DHS OIG discovered an unauthorized copy of its case management system in the possession of a former employee. The agency has previously said that anyone employed by DHS, or associated with a DHS OIG case, between 2002 through 2014 could be affected.

The latest release of information related to a notification sent by Philip S Kaplan, which incorrectly identified the year of employment as 2014. Although most of the DHS employees affected were employed in this year, some may have worked there in other years too.

Anyone associated with a DHS OIG investigation between 2002 through 2017 could also have been affected – previously the timeframe was specified as 2002 through 2017.
