FEMA Seeks Public Comment for New Pre-Disaster Hazard Mitigation Grant Program

FEMA invites the public to comment on a reform for a new pre-disaster mitigation grant program.

The program, Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC), will focus on reducing the nation’s risk by funding public infrastructure projects that increase a community’s resilience before a disaster affects an area.

As a federal disaster mitigation program, BRIC allows FEMA to invest grant monies in infrastructure projects before a disaster affects an area. Posted on an information sharing platform known as IdeaScale, the National Public Infrastructure Pre-Disaster Hazard Mitigation forum topic includes key areas about the development and implementation of BRIC.

Examples of interest areas include infrastructure mitigation projects; hazard mitigation planning; building codes and enforcement; and risk informed funding. The comment period is open from May 20 – July 15. Comments may be entered at: https://fema.ideascale.com/a/campaign-home/61112 or sent by email to [email protected].

To ensure that the needs of the whole community are addressed, FEMA encourages comments from all levels of government and key stakeholders, including citizens and officials from other federal agencies, states, territories, tribes, businesses, critical infrastructure sectors, non-profits, academic and philanthropic organizations.

During the open comment period, FEMA is hosting a webinar series during the month of June. Over the course of four sessions, the agency will provide a brief overview of the different topic areas that are important for the development of the BRIC program followed by an open conversation with stakeholders through the chat platform. For detailed information on each session, visit https://www.fema.gov/drra-bric.
