Canadian Man Found Guilty on Terror Charges in Stabbing of Michigan Airport Officer

A 51-year-old Canadian man has been found guilty of committing an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries for his June 2017 stabbing attack against an officer at Bishop International Airport in Flint, Mich. Amor M. Ftouhi, of Quebec, faces life in prison for three charges including violence at an international airport and interference with airport security.

“Ftouhi conducted research in Canada and entered our country with a plan to obtain a weapon and kill American police officers. With today’s guilty verdict, he will be held accountable for his brutal knife attack on an airport police officer in Flint,” Assistant Attorney General John Demers said in a statement

On June 20, 2017, Ftouhi walked up to Jeff Neville, a Flint Bishop Airport police lieutenant and stabbed him in the neck twice. He then yelled “Allahu Akbar” and “referenced killings in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan,” according to the court records.

Investigators found on Ftouhi’s computer that just before he entered the U.S. on June 16, he researched American gun laws and gun shows in Michigan. But upon entering the country and attending a gun show, he repeatedly found himself unable to buy a firearm. Instead, he bought a knife.

“Protecting our citizens and nation from terrorist attacks remains the top priority of the FBI,” said Timothy Slater, special agent in charge of the FBI Detroit field office. “Today’s conviction is the result of hard work conducted by the men and women of the FBI, our partner agencies on the FBI Detroit Joint Terrorism Task Force, and our foreign partners in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I would also like to acknowledge the heroic actions of civilian and law enforcement officers who were present on the day of the attack and likely saved Lt. Neville’s life.”
