The Department of Justice has announced President Donald Trump’s intent to nominate John Eisenberg as Assistant Attorney General for National Security.
John Eisenberg has a distinguished career in both government service and private practice, with a focus on national security and legal affairs. During President Trump’s first term, Eisenberg served as the Legal Advisor to the National Security Council, Assistant to the President, and Deputy Counsel to the President for National Security Affairs.
Eisenberg’s prior roles at the Department of Justice include Associate Deputy Attorney General in the Office of the Deputy Attorney General and Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Counsel. In addition to his government experience, Eisenberg was a partner at the law firm Kirkland & Ellis, where he specialized in white-collar and internal investigations, as well as data-security issues.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Stanford University and a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. He clerked for Judge J. Michael Luttig of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and for Justice Clarence Thomas of the Supreme Court of the United States.
The nomination of John Eisenberg to serve as Assistant Attorney General for National Security is part of a series of appointments by President Trump to key positions within the Department of Justice. This role requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
