FBI Director Wray Announces Five Senior Executives

FBI Director Christopher Wray has named executives to five senior leadership positions: Ryan T. Young as special agent in charge of the Counterterrorism Division for the Los Angeles Field Office; Gary A. Loeffert as special agent in charge of the Buffalo Field Office; Gregory Ehrie as special agent in charge of the Newark Field Office; Matthew J. DeSarno as special agent in charge of the Criminal Division at the Washington Field Office; and Timothy M. Dunham as special agent in charge of the Counterintelligence Division at the Washington Field Office.

Ryan T. Young

Young most recently served as the chief of the Strategic Technology Section in the Directorate of Intelligence.

Young entered on duty with the FBI as a special agent in 2001, and was assigned to the Miami Field Office, where he worked counterintelligence matters. In 2007, Young was promoted to supervisory special agent in the Counterintelligence Division at FBI Headquarters. In 2012, Young was promoted to unit chief in the Resource Planning Office, where he worked on FBI Internal Policy. In 2014, Young transferred to the Counterterrorism Division to establish the Syria-Iraq Task Force. In 2015, Young was selected as the assistant special agent in charge of the Dallas Field Office.

Young was the recipient of the 2010 FBI Director’s Award for Outstanding Counterintelligence investigation, for the arrest and conviction of Walter Kendall Myers and his wife Gwendolyn for providing top secret information of the Government of Cuba while assigned to the U.S. Department of State.

Gary A. Loeffert

Loeffert most recently served as the special assistant to the executive assistant director for the National Security Branch and chief of the National Security Branch Executive Staff Section.

Loeffert entered on duty with the FBI as a special agent in 1996, and was assigned to the Miami Field Office, where he worked drug trafficking and money laundering. In 2003, Loeffert was promoted to supervisory special agent in the Special Operations Division. In 2005, Loeffert was assigned to lead the Field Oversight Unit in the Directorate of Intelligence. In 2006, Loeffert was promoted to lead the Jacksonville Division Joint Terrorism Task Force. Beginning in 2009, Loeffert supervised the Jacksonville Division’s Safe Streets Task Force, which investigates violent street gangs, child abductions, and human trafficking.

In 2013, Loeffert was promoted to assistant special agent in charge of the Operational Support Branch of the Dallas Division, and in 2015, he assumed leadership of the criminal programs in the Dallas Division.

Gregory Ehrie

Ehrie most recently served as special agent in charge of the Intelligence Division in the New York Field Office.

Ehrie entered on duty with the FBI as a special agent in 1998, and was first assigned to the New York Field Office, where he worked organized crime and drug matters.

Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Ehrie served on the PENTTBOM Task Force investigating the attacks, and in 2003, he was promoted to be a supervisory special agent in the Counterterrorism Division. In 2006, Ehrie was tapped to help create the New York Field Office’s first Human Intelligence Squad.

In 2008, Ehrie was promoted to supervisor over the New York Field Office’s Domestic Terrorism Squad, and during his tenure, served as the acting Legal Attaché in Algiers, Algeria. In 2010, Ehie was the responding on-scene commander for the Times Square bombing in New York City and the subsequent investigation that located and arrested the bomber within 53 hours of the incident. For their efforts, Ehrie and his squad were the recipients of the 2011 Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award.

In 2010, Ehrie was named assistant inspector in the Inspection Division, and in 2012, he was promoted assistant special agent in charge of the Intelligence Branch for the Newark Field Office, where he served until being transferred to lead the Criminal Enterprise Branch in early 2015. Later that year, Ehrie was appointed chief of the Domestic Terrorism Operations Section in the Counterterrorism Division.

Matthew J. DeSarno

DeSarno most recently served as deputy assistant director for the Counterterrorism Division.

DeSarno entered on duty with the FBI as a special agent in 2002, and was assigned to the San Diego Field Office, where he worked violent crimes and gangs matters. In 2007, DeSarno was promoted to supervisory special agent in the Criminal Investigative Division. In 2009, DeSarno was assigned to lead the Chicago Field Office’s Task Force on Gangs, a joint effort targeting the most violent gang members in and around Chicago.

In 2013, DeSarno was promoted to assistant special agent in charge of white collar, public corruption, and civil rights program in the Chicago Field Office, and later that year, DeSarno assumed responsibility for the violent crime, transnational organized crime, SWAT, evidence response, and crisis negotiation programs in the Chicago Field Office.

In 2015, DeSarno was appointed as chief of the Strategic Operations Section in the Counterterrorism Division.

Timothy M. Dunham

Dunham most recently served as section chief of the Leadership Development Program.

Dunham entered on duty with the FBI as a special agent in 2002, and was first assigned to the Chicago Field Office, where he worked counterintelligence matters.

In 2007, Dunham was promoted to supervisory special agent in the Counterintelligence Division at FBI Headquarters, and in 2009, he became a supervisory special agent in the Counterterrorism Division.

In 2011, Dunham was appointed as an FBI detailee to the Central Intelligence Agency, and during that assignment also served as an acting assistant Legal Attaché in Brussels, Belgium.

In 2012, Dunham was promoted to supervisor of a Joint Terrorism Task Force squad in the Albany Field Office, and later in 2012, he served as the acting assistant Legal Attaché in the newly established Stockholm, Sweden, sub-office of the Legal Attaché office in Copenhagen. In 2015, Dunham was promoted to assistant special agent in charge of the Albany Field Office’s Criminal and Administrative Branches.
