The Senate confirmed former CIA director Mike Pompeo as secretary of State by a 57-42 vote.
Pompeo, who replaces Rex Tillerson, is the first CIA director to lead the State Department.
Prior to been appointed as CIA director, Pompeo represented the 4th congressional district of Kansas from 2011 to 2017.
At his confirmation hearing, Pompeo said he is grateful to President Trump for the job and he is looking forward to “representing him and the American people to the rest of the world to further America’s prosperity.”
“In our near-daily Oval Office sessions with President Trump, Mike provided his rich perspective. He will continue to do so as a policymaker,” Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said in a statement. “His experience in the Intelligence Community no doubt will shape his approach as secretary of State. I look forward to working with Mike in his new role, and I thank him for his Intelligence Community service. I hope to welcome nominee Gina Haspel as CIA director very soon.”
