WATCH: Mourners Say Farewell to 9/11 Responder and Hero Luis Alvarez

Retired NYPD bomb squad detective Luis Alvarez, who battled cancer years after working at the scene of World Trade Center collapse, was memorialized Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Astoria, Queens.

Alvarez, a Ground Zero first responder who implored House lawmakers to reauthorize the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, died last weekend in Rockville Centre, N.Y., at age 53.

“As one of my brother’s beloved previous partners once shared with me, ‘Louie was the quietest man I worked with but in the end he made the most noise,’” said his sister Aida Lugo in her eulogy.
