Italy’s Malpensa and Linate Airports, two of the three international airports in Milan, have ordered up to 18 advanced Computed Tomography (CT) screening systems to screen cabin bags. Airport manager SEA Group placed the order with Smiths Detection for its HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX explosives detection systems (EDS) which allow electronic devices and liquids to remain in bags. The scanners also help protect the health of travelers by reducing the number of trays required during security screening and minimizing points of contact at security lanes.
The multi-phase installation will begin in the third quarter of 2020 and is projected to close by the end of 2021. The first four CTiX units will be installed and put into operation at Linate Airport by the end of October 2020. The contract includes preventive and corrective maintenance.
Besides ECAC Standard 3 approval for Europe, which was originally introduced for hold baggage, the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX has also achieved Transportation Security Administration AT-2 certification.
