James Scobey has announced his departure from his role as Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), effective Friday, October 11 according to a post over on his LinkedIn. Scobey, who held the position since August 2022 and previously served as the SEC’s Chief Technology Officer and Assistant Director of Cybersecurity Operations, reflected on his time at the Commission, expressing gratitude for his colleagues and the agency’s focus on digital transformation.
With many years of experience in technology and cybersecurity, Scobey’s leadership contributed to significant advancements at the SEC, particularly under the guidance of David Bottom, the agency’s Chief Information Officer. He highlighted the importance of the collaborative efforts of civil servants and contractors, noting the challenges and successes they faced together.
Before his role at the SEC, Scobey co-founded S2i2, Inc., and served as President and CEO of SigmaCyber, demonstrating his deep expertise in managing technological initiatives and cybersecurity operations. He holds a Master of Engineering in Cybersecurity Policy & Compliance from The George Washington University and both a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and an MBA from the University of Maryland Global Campus.
Scobey did not disclose his next career move but hinted at an announcement on Tuesday. His departure marks the end of an era of digital transformation at the SEC, but his future role in the cybersecurity industry is eagerly anticipated.
