Joe Funderburke, a decorated Army officer and national security expert, has launched his own strategic advisory and consulting firm after more than three decades of military service spanning the Pentagon, the White House, and across every level of military leadership.
Announcing the launch of The Funderburke Group via LinkedIn, he wrote, “After 31 years of service in uniform, from the White House to the Pentagon, and across every level of military leadership, I’m proud to announce the launch of my own strategic advisory and consulting firm” The new firm will focus on strategic planning, national security, public policy, and leadership development.
Funderburke’s resume reads like a blueprint for navigating the highest levels of government and defense strategy. Most recently, he served as a Senior Military Fellow at the Institute for National Strategic Studies, where he advised top defense leaders, including the Secretary of Defense and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Before that, he was Director of Strategic Planning at the National Security Council, where he played a key role in shaping national security policy.
He also held several leadership roles at the Joint Staff, including Special Assistant and Director within the Chairman’s Action Group, and Assistant Deputy Director for Politico-Military Affairs (Asia), a role that required synthesizing strategic context on issues involving China and North Korea. Earlier, as a Fellow at MIT’s Center for International Studies and a Senior Officer at U.S. Special Operations Command, he worked on defense innovation, global partnerships, and counterterrorism strategy.
A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Funderburke holds multiple advanced degrees including a PhD in Security Studies from the University of Central Florida, a master’s in Legislative Affairs from George Washington University, and a master’s in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College. He has also taught graduate-level courses on strategy and military operations at Georgetown and Syracuse Universities.
In addition to launching his firm, Funderburke currently serves as a SkillBridge Fellow at Google, researching AI’s impact on government innovation.
