The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announced the election of R. David Paulison as its new Chairperson in a press release last Tuesday. Paulison, who has been an active member of the NFPA Board since 2015 and served as the first vice chair, steps into this prominent role with a wealth of experience in emergency management and fire safety.
Paulison’s career includes serving as the Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and as the U.S. Fire Administrator. His tenure at FEMA was marked by significant advancements in disaster response and emergency preparedness. Prior to his federal roles, Paulison dedicated 30 years to the Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue Department, starting as a firefighter in 1971 and rising to the position of Fire Chief in 1992. His leadership there was instrumental in enhancing the department’s capabilities and service delivery.
Throughout his career, Paulison has been recognized for his unwavering commitment to public safety and his innovative approach to emergency management. His leadership has not only earned him the respect of his peers but also contributed to substantial improvements in fire and life safety standards nationally.
As the new Chairperson of the NFPA, Paulison will collaborate closely with the organization’s executive leadership team and board members. His focus will be on continuing NFPA’s mission to advance fire, electrical, and life safety on a global scale. Paulison’s extensive experience and strategic vision are expected to drive the organization forward, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of safety standards and practices.
Paulison succeeds Russell Leavitt, executive chairman of Telgian Holdings, Inc., who has completed his second two-year term as Board chair. With Paulison at the helm, the NFPA is poised to strengthen its role as a leader in fire prevention and safety education. His extensive background and proven track record will be invaluable in guiding the organization through future challenges and opportunities.
