The NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence has launched a new AI Laboratory, designed to advance the Alliance’s capabilities in cognitive and information warfare. The lab will serve as a hub for research, experimentation, and technology development, supporting NATO’s strategic communications and operational effectiveness across rapidly evolving digital environments.
The AI Lab’s mission is to help NATO maintain an edge in the cognitive warfare domain by developing tools and expertise that translate artificial intelligence into actionable solutions for defense and resilience. Through testing, model development, and collaboration with academia, industry, and defense partners, the lab is tackling some of the most pressing challenges facing the Alliance, including:
-
Designing synthetic environments and complex digital twins to simulate and prepare for operations in contested domains
-
Developing AI-powered training and audience simulation tools to enhance strategic communications capabilities
-
Improving election security and resilience against disinformation and adversarial manipulation
-
Building predictive and decision-support systems to give policymakers stronger situational awareness and foresight
-
Enhancing autonomous and adaptive agentic capabilities within the information environment
By creating validated prototypes and proof-of-concept models, the AI Lab aims to ensure NATO and its member nations can rapidly integrate emerging technologies into mission operations, turning innovation into immediate operational impact.
The Centre announced that it is currently recruiting for multiple positions within the AI Lab. Candidates with advanced experience in artificial intelligence, research, and cross-sector collaboration are encouraged to apply here.
