South Carolina Unveils Groundbreaking AI Strategy to Revolutionize State Services

The South Carolina Department of Administration (Admin) has announced the publication of the South Carolina State Government’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy in a press release. Developed in collaboration with Gartner and state government information technology and security professionals, this comprehensive strategy is set to guide state agencies in adopting AI technologies effectively and responsibly.

To formulate this strategy, Admin established an AI Workgroup, which included a diverse array of state agencies in terms of size and scope. The development process involved conducting a thorough survey of state agencies and numerous information-gathering sessions. The result is a robust AI strategy for South Carolina state agencies.

The strategy is grounded in the three guiding principles of Protect, Promote, and Pursue, outlining the state’s AI vision, guiding principles, goals, and actions necessary for the productive and responsible use of AI within state agencies. Key initial steps include the establishment of an agency-staffed Center of Excellence (COE) and an AI Advisory Group, which will assist state agencies as they evaluate and implement AI technologies.

With the AI strategy now in place, Admin will collaborate with state agencies to assess the potential uses of AI technologies to enable continuous improvement for state agencies and, ultimately, benefit the citizens of South Carolina.

The strategy’s long-term goals, near-term focus areas, and associated actions outline how the state will develop its foundational AI capabilities. These goals and focus areas detail the resource investments required to achieve the AI vision and deliver widespread benefits across South Carolina.
