Man Climbs on Aircraft as Climate Protestors Cause Airport Security Mayhem

British police dealt with a number of protestors at London’s City Airport on October 10,  in connection with the Extinction Rebellion climate crisis protests across the U.K. capital. One individual has been arrested for climbing on top of an aircraft on the runway, others refused to get off aircraft they had boarded, and a number of people were arrested outside the airport building. An airport spokesperson said the protestor who climbed onto the aircraft was booked on the flight. He live streamed his protest and arrest on Facebook.

A statement from the Metropolitan Police reminded protestors that “targeting an airport and inconveniencing travelers in this way is wholly unacceptable and irresponsible. The consequences of committing offences at airports are serious; individuals breaking the law are being, and will continue to be, arrested and prosecuted where appropriate.”

London City airport remained open but had to cancel two flights as a result of the protest. Police have said a security review will be launched at the airport to prevent a reoccurrence of such breaches.
