Border Patrol Agent Shot on Patrol in Arizona

A Border Patrol agent was wounded early Tuesday while investigating sensor activity near Chimney Canyon, south of Arivaca, Ariz.

The 21-year veteran called for emergency assistance around 4:30 a.m., according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Early indications were the agent was attacked by an unknown number of assailants and that he was struck several times by gunfire. The agent was believed to have returned fire during the attack.

The Border Patrol Tactical Unit deployed to the area, where agents located and arrested multiple subjects who were not legally authorized to enter the U.S., according to the CBP. The agency did not confirm whether the subjects in custody were connected to the shooting.

CBS News reported the agent was in stable condition and good spirits Tuesday.

CBP said the agent is an experienced paramedic and was able to administer self-care while responding agents conducted an emergency evacuation to a local hospital with assistance from an air ambulance.

The FBI is leading an investigation into the incident. Authorities requested that anyone with related information report it to tips.fbi.gov.
