Border Patrol Agents Find Abandoned Marijuana in Soccer Ball Near the Rio Grande River

Border Patrol agents assigned to Eagle Pass Station found a backpack containing 1.98 pounds of marijuana inside a soccer ball near the Rio Grande, Nov. 14.

“Smugglers use a wide array of concealment methods,” said Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Raul L. Ortiz. “In this case, the contraband was hidden inside a toy that could have potentially caused a tragedy if a child had encountered it.  Thankfully, our agents vigilance and rapid response prevented any harm from reaching our community.”

An agent assigned to the Eagle Pass Station, while conducting linewatch operations, heard a loud noise coming from outside a service vehicle. After a search of the area, agents discovered a backpack containing a soccer ball that appeared to have been tampered with.  Upon inspection, the soccer ball was found to contain 1.98 pounds of marijuana, worth an estimated $962.73.  The contraband was turned over to Maverick County Sheriff’s Office.
