U. S. Border Patrol, San Diego Sector and its Brown Field Station honored fallen Border Patrol Agent Jarod Dittman and his family by mounting two memorial signs along a dedicated portion of Highway 94 near Jamul on Sept. 9, 2019.
California Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 154 designates a portion of State Highway 94 as a memorial highway in his name. This will serve as a reminder of the sacrifices agents and peace officers make on a daily basis.
San Diego Border Patrol Agents joined the Dittman family at the Eastlake Church for prayers, remembrance, and the unveiling of the memorial sign.
The ceremony included comments from Chief Patrol Agent Douglas Harrison and Brown Field Station’s Patrol Agent in Charge Patricia McGurk. The invocation was delivered by San Diego Sector Chaplain Rick Meyer.
“Thank you for never leaving my side,” said Mrs. Dittman, the widow of Jarod, referring to the United States Border Patrol and their commitment to comforting her family the past 11 years.
Border Patrol agent Jarod Dittman died from injuries he sustained from an on-duty vehicle accident that occurred on March 30, 2008, near the 8.5 mile marker on Otay Lakes Road in Jamul. Jarod began his shift at midnight and as he was driving to his assigned area to patrol, he was involved in a single car rollover accident. Another agent found Jarod after he had been ejected from his service vehicle and immediately requested paramedics. Jarod was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died at 2 a.m.
Agent Dittman entered on duty with the U.S. Border Patrol on March 5, 2007, as a member of the 660th Session of the U.S Border Patrol Academy. He was assigned to the Brown Field Station immediately after graduation. Prior to joining the Border Patrol, Agent Dittman served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
Agent Dittman was 28 years old at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
