A $200,000 award to CryptoMove to enhance Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) security was announced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T).
DHS said, “CBP’s use of sUAS enhances mission capabilities and supports Border Patrol agents’ activities, including greater overall situational awareness and detection, tracking, apprehension, and search and rescue operations.”
The project was awarded under the Silicon Valley Innovation Program (SVIP) Other Transaction Solicitation (OTS) that’s earmarked for “non-traditional performers to offer solutions to some of the toughest threats facing DHS and the homeland security mission.”
“As CBP explores the use of sUAS to support operations, we know there is a need to develop capabilities to protect sUAS platforms from malicious actors,” said CBP Acting Commissioner Kevin McAleenan. “The Silicon Valley Innovation Program offers CBP a new avenue to seek and test this technology, which is essential to securing our operations.”
CryptoMove proposes a “dynamic defense system and data fragmentation approach for sUAS platforms embedded in all levels of the technology architecture to enable automated system resilience for connected devices,” the announcement explained.
“Helping our operators deploy technology in secure environments is essential,” said Acting DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology Dr. Robert Griffin. “I am pleased S&T can help those on the front lines focus on what is mission critical while we leverage our expertise and reach to the innovation community on novel security solutions.”
Companies participating in the SVIP are eligible for up to $800,000 in non-dilutive funding to adapt commercial technologies for homeland security use cases. This is the fourth award under the Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Capabilities Solicitation – HSHQDC-16-R-00114, one of five active calls under the SVIP. The call is open until April 27, 2017.
