U.S. Customs and Border Protection today released use of force statistics on CBP.gov. The latest metrics detail actions for fiscal year 2018 ending in March.
For the fiscal year to date (Oct. 1, 2017, through March 31, 2018), CBP personnel have been involved in 265 incidents that include at least one use of force, and 211 incidents that include at least one assault. There have been 442 singular uses of force and 366 singular assaults.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is charged with enforcing the nation’s laws while protecting the civil rights and civil liberties of every individual with whom we interact. CBP’s authority to enforce the law, even to the point of lethal force, appropriately bears the burden of accountability, which includes integrity and transparency.
