Counterterrorism Police on Scene at British Shopping Mall Following Knife Attack

Police are investigating a stabbing attack at the Arndale Shopping Centre in Manchester, U.K.  A statement from Greater Manchester Police says early enquiries suggest that several people have been stabbed. One witness said they saw a man running around, lunging at multiple people and stabbing them. The shopping center has been evacuated and armed police are on guard.

A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of serious assault and has been taken into custody for questioning. Footage posted on Twitter showed a police officer pointing a Taser at a man lying face down on the pavement outside the shopping center as another officer handcuffed him. The man was later detained under the Mental Health Act after assessment.

The same shopping center was evacuated on October 4 after youths attacked security personnel. At the time, shoppers reported seeing bomb detection vans and said some sort of chemical had been “let off” leaving them coughing and sneezing. Two youths were arrested following the incident.
