‘Iconic Venue’ Leaders Address Threat with ‘Significant’ Risk Management Training

In response to the constantly evolving threat to mass spectator gatherings and public assembly areas, The National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) at The University of Southern Mississippi conducts adaptable and responsive comprehensive training courses that are designed to build resilience in communities and venues.

On Oct. 2, NCS4 hosted a Sport Event Risk Management (AWR-167) training course at Citi Field in New York City, home of the New York Mets major league baseball team. The two-day training course brought together high-level public safety executives from New York City, as well as venue operators, fire/Hazmat, and emergency managers. This is the first in a series of four courses the attendees will complete.

“The training is significant in that the attendees here include senior level leaders who deal with safety and security issues at some of the most iconic venues in the nation,” said NCS4 Director Lou Marciani. “At this training, these safety and security teams will increase their knowledge of planning, risk assessment, training, and continuous improvement practices to bring back to their respective divisions.”

The Sport Event Risk Management course is designed to build sport and special event risk management capabilities for community-wide collaboration and mitigation. Some of the topics covered in the course include threat identification, multi-agency collaboration, and sport security planning.

Deputy Chief Scott Shanley serves as the Commanding Officer of the Critical Response Unit at the New York Police Department Counterterrorism Bureau. As an attendee in the course, Shanley states, “The uniqueness of this training is that we are combining training, education and exercise to establish benchmarks.” He continues, “By bringing together our different agencies we are able to educate our higher-level executives into the world of sports security and integrate that into our everyday security efforts.”

To date, NCS4 has trained more than 10,000 professionals representing over 1,200 local agencies responsible for safety and security at mass gatherings. With 128 training deliveries across the United States each year, the NCS4 has the capacity to train over 5,000 professionals annually.

Other courses offered include Sport and Special Events Evacuation Training and Exercise and Sports and Special Events Incident Management, as well as an enhanced Incident Management course. Individuals that have completed all four Sport and Special Events Safety and Security Courses will receive a certificate of achievement called The National Sport Safety and Security Professional Development Certificate.
