Officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command arrested a man on November 14 on suspicion of terrorism offenses.
The 26-year-old man was arrested after arriving at Heathrow Airport on an inbound flight to the U.K. from Turkey. He was arrested on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts under section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.
The man was detained under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) and currently remains in police custody. Under PACE, police officers have the right to stop and search individuals, belongings and premises before making an arrest.
A Metropolitan Police statement said the arrest is Syria-related.
On November 17, the man was named by the Metropolitan Police as Mamun Rashid, and charged with preparation of terrorist acts. The following day, he appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court where he spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth, and give his nationality as British. He was remanded in custody ahead of a hearing at the Old Bailey court in December
