The White House National Security Council (NSC) has emphasized that the United States is not involved in the recent developments in Syria, where violent clashes have erupted amidst the ongoing civil war. NSC spokesman Sean Savett issued a statement underscoring that while the U.S. remains closely monitoring the situation and maintaining communication with regional allies, it distances itself from the offensive reportedly led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a designated terrorist organization.
Savett pointed to the entrenched political and military dynamics that have shaped Syria’s conflict, stating, “The Assad regime’s ongoing refusal to engage in the political process outlined in UNSCR 2254, and its reliance on Russia and Iran, created the conditions now unfolding, including the collapse of Assad regime lines in northwest Syria.”
Despite the turmoil, the United States has reiterated its focus on critical objectives in the region. “We will also continue to fully defend and protect U.S. personnel and U.S. military positions, which remain essential to ensuring that ISIS can never again resurge in Syria,” Savett affirmed. He also highlighted the importance of a political resolution, urging de-escalation and adherence to the roadmap established by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254, which calls for a credible political process to resolve the conflict.
