The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has launched an innovative new campaign to bolster online security awareness, featuring a catchy and informative music video titled “Joan the Phone.” Released as part of CISA’s “Secure Our World” initiative, the video stars CISA Director Jen Easterly alongside the character Joan the Phone. The video offers a creative and engaging way to educate the public on common cybersecurity threats, such as phishing, and provides simple steps to stay secure online.
In the video, viewers learn about the importance of recognizing and reporting phishing attempts, using strong passwords, turning on multi-factor authentication (MFA), and keeping software up to date. These steps are essential for protecting personal and business information in an increasingly digital world.
CISA’s “Secure Our World” campaign emphasizes the importance of these basic cybersecurity practices. According to a tip sheet provided by CISA, there are four key actions everyone can take to enhance their online safety:
- Recognize & Report Phishing: Be wary of suspicious messages that use alarming language or seem too good to be true. Instead of clicking on any links or providing personal information, report the phishing attempt and delete the message.
- Use Strong Passwords: Create passwords that are at least 16 characters long, random, and unique for each account. A password manager can help securely store and generate strong passwords.
- Turn on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): MFA adds an extra layer of security beyond just a password. It might involve a face scan, fingerprint, or a code sent by text. Enabling MFA makes it significantly harder for hackers to gain access to your accounts.
- Update Software Regularly: Keeping your devices, apps, and software up to date is crucial. Updates often include security patches that protect against vulnerabilities. Turn on automatic updates to ensure you always have the latest protection.
These tips are easy to follow and make a significant difference in safeguarding your digital presence.
