The UN panel that is enforcing trade sanctions against North Korea has been hacked, according to a report from the Washington Post.
The panel is said to have been hacked repeatedly by a “nation-state actor” who has compromised email accounts of panel members. The Post said it reviewed a heavily redacted draft of a UN Panel of Experts report, which included details of the attack. Although the report does not reveal the nature of data that hackers acquired, the panel regularly review secret intelligence information about North Korean attacks.
North Korea is reported to be smuggling goods in and out of the country in order to evade the trade sanctions that have been imposed to try and deter Kim Jong-un from pursuing nuclear weapons programs. The panel is identifying such smuggling so it can be stopped.
The Post quotes an excerpt from the report, due to be released later this month: “The panel continues to be targeted by a sophisticated hacking campaign.”
