USCG Launches Aqua Alert Pilot to Boost Maritime Emergency Response

U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound is launching Aqua Alert, a new pilot program designed to quickly notify the public about urgent maritime emergencies, according to a press release.

Modeled after Amber Alerts for missing children and Silver Alerts for seniors, Aqua Alert provides real-time information to aid search and rescue efforts on the water.

Aqua Alerts will be broadcast directly to mobile devices through participating Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) systems, delivering vital details such as descriptions of missing persons or vessels and their last known locations.

Time is Critical in Maritime Emergencies

Rapid response is crucial when lives are at stake. Aqua Alert delivers immediate notifications to help accelerate search and rescue operations for boaters in distress.

Public Cooperation is Key

The effectiveness of Aqua Alert depends on public awareness and cooperation. The Coast Guard urges individuals to:

  • Take Aqua Alerts seriously, as they are issued only for credible incidents.
  • Remain vigilant when on or near the water.
  • Avoid attempting rescues unless properly trained and equipped.
  • Enabling your location allows you to receive more accurate and timely alerts based on your real-time position, ensuring you’re informed about nearby emergencies.

  • Keep emergency numbers accessible, but refrain from calling the Coast Guard unless providing actionable information related to an active Aqua Alert. Unnecessary calls can overload communication lines and hinder rescue efforts.
  • Mariners are reminded to use VHF Channel 16 or call the Sector Long Island Sound Command Center at (866) 299-8031 for emergencies.

The U.S. Coast Guard remains committed to enhancing maritime safety and response capabilities. Aqua Alert represents a critical step forward in protecting lives on the water.
