Trump Tells Democrats He Won’t Sign Bills Without ‘Perfect’ Border Security

President Trump on Thursday morning warned the incoming majority of House Democrats that he will not sign any upcoming legislation unless he receives his $5 billion request for border security. On Wednesday evening, the Senate passed a short-term spending bill to avert a partial government shutdown without including funds for wall construction at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Trump tweeted that Democrats are “putting politics over country,” and that “what they are just beginning to realize is that I will not sign any of their legislation, including infrastructure, unless it has perfect Border Security. U.S.A. WINS!”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told reporters Tuesday that a previous proposal to fund the government and “thread the needle” on border funding was sent to Senate Democratic leadership and rejected.

Last week, the president met Democratic leaders Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi and held a contentious on-camera dispute regarding wall funding. The president said that he would be proud to shut down the government over border security.
