Friends and neighbors are mourning the loss of firefighter Corey Comperatore, the man who was shot and killed during the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Known as a devoted family man and dedicated community servant, Comperatore was quick to lend a hand to those in need.
Comperatore attended the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, part of Trump’s 2024 reelection campaign, with his family. Pennsylvania State Police confirmed his identity on Sunday. According to Governor Josh Shapiro, Comperatore died heroically while trying to protect his family during the attack.
Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell, the U.S. Fire Administrator, expressed profound sorrow on LinkedIn: “Our hearts are broken for the fellow firefighters, family, and friends of Buffalo Township (PA) Volunteer Chief Corey Comperatore. U.S. Fire Administration sends our deepest sympathy.”
Authorities identified the gunman in Saturday’s attack as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was killed by Secret Service agents at the scene. The FBI is investigating the incident as an assassination attempt.
Governor Shapiro, who directed flags to be flown at half-staff in Comperatore’s memory, spoke with Comperatore’s wife and two daughters on Sunday. He highlighted Comperatore’s bravery and devotion to his family, noting that he shielded them from the gunfire.
An enthusiastic supporter of Trump, Comperatore was excited to attend the rally. His selfless act of diving on his family to protect them from the gunfire exemplified his character, Shapiro said.
President Joe Biden also expressed his condolences to Comperatore’s family, stating, “We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim who was killed. He was a father; he was protecting his family from the bullets being fired when he lost his life. God love him. We are also praying for the full recovery of those who were injured.”
In a poignant tribute, the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company hung Comperatore’s uniform outside the fire station on Sunday, honoring his life and service. The community continues to remember and celebrate the legacy of a man who lived to serve and protect others.
