Retired New York Police Department Officer Derrick Bishop passed away Sept. 19 from cancer related to his response to the World Trade Center on 9/11. He was 60 years old.
Bishop served 21 years on the force. He leaves behind a wife, Patricia, and daughters Dominique and Chanel.
His sister, Jeaneen Bishop, said he suffered from thyroid cancer and prostate cancer, but was never able to get enrolled in the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund.
“He’s the oldest brother in the family” and the first in his family to serve in law enforcement, she said, according to the New York Daily News. “He initiated it all. We’re very proud. It was a great, great loss.”
“I told him once after our father died, ‘Derrick, you have some big shoes to fill,’” she said. “He said ‘I know, I know.’ He accomplished that and more. … I tell him now, I got some bigger shoes to fill, a lot of work to do.”
