Sri Lanka Bomb Attacks Suspect Arrested

One of the alleged ringleaders in the 21 April bomb attacks in Sri Lanka has been arrested following the publication of an INTERPOL Red Notice.

Ahamed Milhan Hayathu Mohamed, a 29-year-old Sri Lankan national, wanted on charges including terrorism and murder, was extradited to Sri Lanka on June 14, along with four other suspects, following their arrest in the Middle East.

The Red Notice was issued as part of the support to the investigation provided by INTERPOL, including its deployment of an Incident Response Team (IRT) immediately following the bombings which targeted churches and hotels and left hundreds dead and injured.

“The arrest and extradition of one of the key suspects in the Sri Lanka bomb attacks is an important step in the ongoing investigation, and one which INTERPOL is proud to have supported,” said INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock.

“Red Notices are a powerful tool in helping our member countries cooperate seamlessly across borders in order to locate and bring international fugitives to justice,” added the INTERPOL Chief.

The IRT, which was the first international team to arrive in Colombo after the attacks, was in place from 23 April until 22 May.

The team included expertise in areas including counter-terrorism, explosives, analysis and Disaster Victim Identification, in addition to providing real-time crosschecks against INTERPOL’s global databases.

A Red Notice is a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.
