Coast Guard, California State University Long Beach Sign Memorandum of Agreement

The Coast Guard and California State University Long Beach (CSULB) signed an updated memorandum of agreement (MOA) last Thursday to continue the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) scholarship program at the CSULB campus.

The MOA outlines the university as a member of the Coast Guard’s Minority-Serving Institution partnership program. CSPI is a program designed for motivated individuals who demonstrate high academic and leadership excellence and a desire to serve their country in the Coast Guard.

“The scholarship recipients will represent the future of the Coast Guard, and investing in their education and career development will help with their success,” said Rear Adm. Andrew Sugimoto, Coast Guard Pacific Area deputy commander. “My personal ties to this institution – my father taught here, my wife is an alumni and the university president’s brother was my physics instructor at the Coast Guard Academy – demonstrates the value of nurturing the next generation.”

Students can apply if they are currently enrolled, accepted for enrollment or pending enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program, with no more than two academic years until graduation or program application date.
