On December 11, the President signed into law H.R. 5302, the “Michel O. Maceda Memorial Act,” officially designating the Air and Marine Operations Marine Unit in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, as the Michel O. Maceda Marine Unit. This act pays tribute to Marine Interdiction Agent Michel O. Maceda, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on November 17, 2022.
Agent Maceda was fatally injured during a high-risk boarding operation off the coast of Puerto Rico. While conducting the mission alongside two fellow agents, one of the vessel’s occupants opened fire, wounding all three agents. Despite their efforts, Agent Maceda succumbed to his injuries, while the other two agents sustained serious wounds but survived.
Agent Maceda had recently served as a marine interdiction agent in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. His service with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) began on April 11, 2016, as a Border Patrol agent in Douglas, Arizona. On January 31, 2021, he transitioned to Air and Marine Operations, where he played a critical role in safeguarding U.S. borders and maritime territories. Prior to joining CBP, Agent Maceda honorably served his country in the United States Army.
The newly designated Michel O. Maceda Marine Unit serves as a lasting memorial to Agent Maceda’s courage, sacrifice, and commitment to protecting the nation. His legacy extends beyond his professional achievements, remembered as a devoted son, father, and brother. Agent Maceda is survived by his parents, a daughter, and a brother, who continue to honor his memory.
