‘The How and Why Are Not Important to Us’: Family, Fellow Sailors Remember 5th Fleet Commander

The U.S. Naval Force Central Command (NAVCENT)/ U.S. 5th Fleet team of service members and civilians gathered in the gymnasium on Naval Support Activity Bahrain to remember the life of Vice Adm. Scott A. Stearney during a memorial service Dec. 5.

More than 500 people came together in remembrance of the former NAVCENT commander to offer condolences and support to the Stearney family and the joint military team he led.

“Today we come to remember, to honor and to give thanks for the life of Scott Stearney who was an American Sailor who earned a special place in the hearts of so many he served with,” said Vice Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Bill Moran. “His love for his family was endless, and while we cannot absorb or even comprehend the pain, we will wrap our arms around them and hold them close, because we are a Navy family. We will not leave their side.”

The service consisted of an acknowledgement by Moran, a spiritual reflection and a eulogy delivered by Brian Stearney, the youngest sibling of the late Vice Adm. Stearney. He spoke about his brother’s life, devotion to family, and his loyalty to America and the men and women he was fortunate enough to lead.

“My brother thoroughly enjoyed what he did. He embraced the philosophy of teamwork and commitment to mission,” said Stearney. “The how and why are not important to us, because he will always be our hero. Your family loves you, I love you and God bless you.”

Stearney was found deceased in his residence in Bahrain Dec. 1. The cause of his death is under investigation.

Moran was in country to honor the memory of Stearney and meet with military leaders and diplomats in the region to convey America and its allies remain committed and ready to maintain maritime stability, freedom of navigation and security around the world.
