U.S. Coast Guard Academy Honored as Leader in Public Service

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy has been recognized as one of 25 colleges and universities committed to advance leadership in pursuit of the public good and the standards of justice, equity, diversity, and liberty.

The Carnegie Leadership for Public Purpose Classification designation was awarded by the American Council on Education (ACE), the Doerr Institute for New Leaders at Rice University, and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

According to these organizations, the designation is the result of an independent and rigorous assessment of an institution’s extraordinary commitment to, investment in, and accomplishment at addressing pressing issues of the societies they serve.

The institutions receiving the inaugural designation include 15 public and 10 private institutions from across the country.  “These institutions have demonstrated a relentless commitment to fostering leaders dedicated to the pursuit of vital public goods,” said Carnegie Foundation President Timothy F.C. Knowles. “Students from these institutions will undoubtedly shape a brighter future for us all, upholding fundamental American values and advancing opportunity for the nation.”

“This is a significant recognition of the commitment of today’s Academy community to produce the next generation of Coast Guard leaders who will serve their country and humanity,” said Rear Adm. Michael Johnston, Academy Superintendent.

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy offers a quality higher education experience that emphasizes leadership, physical fitness and professional development leading to a guaranteed job upon graduation as an officer in the United States Coast Guard.

The Carnegie Leadership for Public Purpose is an elective classification for US colleges and universities that recognizes institutions that develop leadership skills in all stakeholders. The classification was established by Rice University’s Doerr Institute, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and the American Council on Education (ACE). The classification is based on the idea that leadership for public purpose is a public good that goes beyond personal gain and focuses on collective goals like justice, equity, diversity, and liberty.
