New Explore250 App Aims to Help Travelers Plan Road Trips for U.S. 250th Birthday

The U.S. Department of Transportation on has announced the launch of a new road trip planning app developed in partnership with General Motors and HERE Technologies, aimed at helping travelers explore destinations across the country ahead of the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026.

The app, called Explore250, is designed to help users plan road trips by highlighting more than 250 destinations nationwide, including historic sites, cultural landmarks, and travel attractions. The app is now available for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play.

“What better way is there to see what makes America the greatest country on earth than a good old-fashioned road trip,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. “In partnership with GM, I’m thrilled to launch Explore250 to encourage every American to plan an unforgettable journey and celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday. This innovative app will help families map out their routes, uncover hidden gems, and connect with the rich tapestry of our proud history—all from the driver’s seat. Start your engines, America!”

According to the Transportation Department, Explore250 allows users to plan trips by theme and collect digital “stamps” at featured destinations. Locations highlighted in the app range from the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville to the Route 66 Museum in Victorville, California.

Transportation officials said the app is intended to encourage domestic travel and provide an interactive way for the public to engage with historic and cultural sites during the upcoming 250th birthday celebration next year. Secretary Duffy demonstrated the app during a ride in a newly unveiled Stars and Steel Limited Collection Corvette.
