Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at Richmond International Airport achieved a milestone by screening the highest number of passengers ever in a single day on Thursday, May 23. The officers processed 9,857 individuals at the airport’s two security checkpoints, surpassing the previous record of 9,711 set last year.
This record-breaking achievement occurred during the busy Memorial Day Weekend travel period, highlighting the significant increase in air travel. Nationwide, TSA officers screened 2,897,417 individuals on the same day, marking the second-highest number of passengers screened in a single day in TSA’s 22-year history.
“The fact that our officers screened so many people on Thursday is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our TSA workforce,” said Robin “Chuck” Burke, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Richmond International Airport. “Holiday travel periods are always somewhat hectic, but our officers remain focused on their mission and they continue to do so in an efficient and courteous manner to ensure that travelers get to their destinations safely.”
Burke emphasized the importance of travelers being well-prepared for the screening process. “The most important things that travelers can do is to get to the airport early and come prepared to go through the checkpoint screening process,” he added.
This achievement underscores the commitment and efficiency of the TSA workforce in handling high volumes of passengers, ensuring security, and maintaining smooth operations during peak travel times.
