Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) discovered eight firearms at security checkpoints in the month of July.
In addition to those eight, another firearm was detected Saturday, Aug. 3. So far, TSA officers have stopped 37 firearms at DTW checkpoints this year. In 2023, 96 firearms were stopped over the entire year.
When a TSA officer detects the image of a handgun on the X-ray screen while screening of carry-on luggage, TSA officials immediately alert the Wayne County Airport Police, who respond to the checkpoint and take possession of the weapon.
“Individuals who own firearms should familiarize themselves with regulations regarding where their weapons can and cannot be carried,” Michigan TSA Federal Security Director Reggie Stephens said. “As we continue to see increased summer travel volumes, we encourage everyone to prepare for the screening experience and not bring prohibited items, which increase risks and delays for all passengers.”
Nationwide, TSA officers intercepted 3,269 firearms at airport security checkpoints during the first half of 2024. The penalty for bringing weapons to the airport can reach as high as $14,950, depending on the circumstances. TSA determines the penalty amount for a violation based on the circumstances in each case. TSA will continue to revoke TSA PreCheck® eligibility for at least five years for passengers caught with a firearm in their possession.
