Mark Temnycky Awarded Cross of the Patriot of Ukraine for Reporting on Russia’s War

Journalist and geopolitical analyst Mark Temnycky has been awarded the Cross of the Patriot of Ukraine, an honorary medal from the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, recognizing his reporting and analysis related to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and broader developments across Eastern Europe and Eurasia.

Temnycky shared news of the recognition in a recent post, noting that the award reflects his coverage of the war in Ukraine as well as his work examining political, security, and regional developments in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. The recognition also acknowledged his work with organizations including the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, the Plast Ukrainian Scouting Organization, Ukrainian Catholic University, and Razom for Ukraine.

Temnycky serves as a nonresident fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center and contributes geopolitical analysis to Forbes. Over the past decade, he has covered national security, foreign policy, energy security, and political developments across the United States, Europe, and Eurasia.

His reporting has appeared in numerous international outlets. In addition to news reporting, Temnycky has contributed research and analysis to several policy organizations and think tanks, including the Atlantic Council, the Wilson Center, the Center for European Policy Analysis, the Modern War Institute, the Center for Maritime Strategy, and the Foreign Policy Research Institute.

His work on security and regional affairs has been cited or referenced by institutions including the European Parliament, NATO Library, NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence, the U.S. Army, the Helsinki Commission, the United Nations University, RAND Corporation, and Transparency International.

Before focusing on journalism and research full time, Temnycky worked for nearly seven years as a defense contractor, supporting divisions within the U.S. Department of Defense’s Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment.

In February 2025, he served as lead author of a report produced at the U.S. Military Academy examining Russia’s war in Ukraine and its implications for American and European national security. The report was prepared for the Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Temnycky holds two graduate degrees from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, including a Master of Public Administration and a Master of Arts in International Relations.
