Coast Guard Officer Relieved of Duty for ‘Leadership Deficiencies’ After Crewmember Death

Earlier this year, a crewmember of an Alaska ship was killed by a shoreside crane in a ship yard accident. Now, officials have relieved the commanding officer of that ship following an investigation that revealed lapses in leadership.

According to a release from The U.S. Coast Guard, “improper operation of the shoreside crane was the direct cause” of Chief Warrant Officer Michael Kozloski’s death.

Kozloski hailed from Mahopac, New York. Officials said he faithfully served his country for over 17 years before his death on January 31, when he was struck by a crane that rolled over at the Coast Guard buoy yard in Homer.
