Coast Guard Rear Admiral T.J. Jones Passes Away at 58

Thomas Warren “TJ” Jones was born on December 20, 1960 to Kenneth R. and Ruth M. (Hanley) Jones in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He died suddenly at his home in Vienna, Virginia, on March 30, 2019.

Rear Admiral Jones is survived by Pam Jones, his wife of 34 years, his daughter, Madison Kate, who is a senior at the University of New Hampshire; the world’s best shih tzu, Minnie; his parents, Ken and Ruth Jones, brothers Ken (Nancy) Jones of Lake Worth, Florida; Steven (Heather) Jones of Chapel Hill, NC; nieces and nephews Keara, Casey, Graham, and Kate; and a plethora of friends and family nationwide.

After graduating from Joppatowne High School in Joppa, Maryland in 1979, Tom “TJ” Jones attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where he became a lifelong Terrapin fan. On a spring break trip to Key West in 1982, TJ met his future wife, Pamela C. Jones. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1983. After graduation, he fulfilled his dream of joining the Coast Guard by enrolling in Coast Guard Officer Candidate School in Yorktown, Virginia, receiving his commission in 1984. TJ and Pam married on September 1, 1985, and have been enjoying a life of adventure and service to their country, their family, and the Coast Guard ever since.

Rear Admiral Jones served 33 years in the Coast Guard. He retired as a Rear Admiral on June 30, 2017. His diverse career included staff and field assignments across the Coast Guard enterprise. His Flag officer assignments included: Director of Strategic Management of Doctrine, Director of Operational Logistics and the Deputy for Mission Support. His staff assignments included: Chief of the Office of Civil Engineering, Chief, Office of Budget and Programs at Coast Guard Headquarters, where he served as the principle resource advisor to the Commandant of the Coast Guard; Program Reviewer and the Acquisition, Construction and Improvements Budget Coordinator in the Coast Guard Chief of Staff’s Office; and Fifth Coast Guard District Civil Engineering staff.

Rear Admiral Jones’ field assignments included service as Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard Research & Development Center; Commanding Officer of Civil Engineering Unit Providence; Project Manager at the Facilities Design and Construction Center, Atlantic; Facilities Engineering Officer at Integrated Support Command Portsmouth; Greater Antilles Section Civil Engineer and Industrial Manager; and sea tours in Coast Guard Cutters TANEY and INGHAM. After retirement, he served as the Director of the Cyber‐Chief Information Officer‐C4IT Transformation Program Integration Office. He then became a member of the Senior Executive Service (SES) for the Coast Guard and served as the Director of Hurricane Reconstitution.

Rear Admiral Jones earned a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College; a Master of Public Administration Degree from Old Dominion University; and a Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois.

His awards included the Distinguished Service Medal, four Legions of Merit, and three Meritorious Service Medals. He was also recognized as the Coast Guard Engineer of the Year in 2004. Rear Admiral Jones was also a registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

TJ’s greatest joys in life were Pam, Madison, Minnie, and the rest of his family, friends and the Coast Guard. He enjoyed living life and eating dessert to a soundtrack of diverse music (especially live or on public radio); cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Maryland Terrapins, and the Green Bay Packers. He approached life wearing proverbial rose‐colored glasses, with a glass‐is‐half‐full attitude. He made the most of every day and had a wealth of optimism and a willingness to serve his friends, family, country and community in any capacity.
