The Navy’s initiative to provide free, high-speed Wi-Fi to all Navy owned-and-operated unaccompanied housing (UH) has reached 86 percent completion, with the service now available in 827 of 952 total buildings since launching last November.
The program, a partnership between Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) and the Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM), continued its expansion with service going live at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples, Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella, and NSA Souda Bay on April 1.
Driven by a focus on improving the quality of life and well-being of Sailors, the Wi-Fi expansion has seen rapid adoption, with 70.5 percent of residents in available buildings registered for the service as of February. A continuous survey of residents shows an 84 percent overall satisfaction rate reflecting the program’s success.
“This initiative is a direct reflection of our unwavering commitment to the well-being of our Sailors,” said Vice Adm. Scott Gray, Commander, Navy Installations Command. “Providing free, high-speed Wi-Fi is a fundamental step in improving their quality of life, ensuring they have the connectivity they need for personal and professional growth. We are dedicated to delivering the resources that support our warfighters, and this program is a testament to that promise.”
Program managers report the rollout has been relatively smooth. The few connection issues identified after launch were quickly addressed by service providers. Sailors who experience any connection issues are encouraged to contact the service provider’s help desk for immediate support.
The program offers both filtered free Wi-Fi and subsidized speed upgrades without long-term contracts or termination fees, complying with the Military Honor and Decency Act of 1996. The goal is to deliver free, high-speed Wi-Fi to most Navy-owned and operated unaccompanied housing by early 2027.
