The U.S. Secret Service continues to strengthen its technology leadership bench with the appointment of Craig Basham as Deputy Chief Information Officer (CIO).
Basham brings decades of federal IT and operational experience to the role, having most recently served as the Deputy Executive Director for the Information Technology Operations (ITOPS) Directorate within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO). In that capacity, he led the delivery of secure, reliable IT services supporting more than 12,000 personnel across over 30 major sites in the National Capital Region, as well as numerous field offices nationwide. His portfolio also included direct communications support for the Secretary and Deputy Secretary during travel—underscoring the mission-critical nature of his work.
A highly respected leader within the DHS IT community, Basham has held senior roles across DHS OCIO and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), including service in both the U.S. Border Patrol and CBP’s Office of Information and Technology. Throughout his career, he has built strong partnerships across federal agencies, state and local governments, private sector organizations, and international partners—leveraging collaboration to drive innovation and solve complex operational challenges.
His public service began in the U.S. Army, followed by time as a Department of Defense civilian in Germany, further grounding his leadership in mission-focused execution and global perspective.
At the Secret Service, Basham joins a growing cadre of accomplished technology leaders under Chief Operating Officer Chris Toms and CIO Chris Kraft. Together, they are advancing the agency’s mission through modern IT, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies—critical capabilities in an increasingly complex threat environment.
Basham holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland University College and is a graduate of the Harvard University Senior Executive Fellows program as well as the National Defense University CIO certification program.
As the Secret Service continues to modernize and evolve, Craig Basham’s leadership will play a key role in shaping the future of its technology enterprise and supporting its critical protective and investigative missions.
