CBP Unveils 2024-2028 IT Strategy to Modernize Infrastructure and Strengthen National Security

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has released its 2024-2028 IT Strategy, aimed at modernizing its technological infrastructure to bolster border security, immigration, and trade. The strategy focuses on six priority areas: mission-critical infrastructure, applications, operational technology, cybersecurity, governance, and business operations, with a budget of $1.8 billion dedicated to enhancing IT services.

The plan prioritizes innovation and modernization, with significant emphasis on cloud computing, responsible AI, and zero-trust cybersecurity measures. The goal is to improve operational efficiency, data-driven decision-making, and streamline processes for frontline operations.

According to CBP Chief Information Officer Sonny Bhagowalia, “Our goals for this multi-year strategy are focused on six areas: Mission Infrastructure, Mission Applications, Operational/Information Technology, Cybersecurity, IT/IRM Governance, and CIO Business Operations. OIT will continue to utilize cutting edge technologies from 2024 to 2028 to support ongoing innovations that keep pace with evolving mission needs.

Key components of the strategy include:
– Expanding cloud services to enable scalability and flexibility in IT operations.
– Strengthening cybersecurity protocols with a focus on zero-trust architecture, safeguarding sensitive information from emerging threats.
– Enhancing the integration of operational technologies like drones, sensors, and surveillance systems, to provide real-time data to frontline personnel.
– Driving innovation through AI and machine learning for more efficient data analysis and decision-making, with applications in trade, travel, and border security.

The plan also aims to enhance internal governance, focusing on accountability, transparency, and the alignment of IT investments with mission outcomes. This includes the modernization of legacy systems and adopting best practices for agile development to ensure rapid delivery of IT services that meet the evolving needs of CBP.

Bhagowalia added, “In advancing our strategic goals, the impact of our collective efforts amplifies across all focus areas.

With the 2024-2028 IT Strategy, CBP continues its focus on integrating cutting-edge technologies to maintain its mission-critical operations, from enhancing border security to facilitating legal trade and travel, ensuring CBP’s IT framework can adapt to the ever-changing landscape of national security. The strategy’s success will rely on strong collaboration between federal agencies, the private sector, and industry partners.
