Sheriff’s Office Warns Public About Traffic Violation Text Message Scam

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a fraudulent “Notice of Hearing – Traffic Violation” text message circulating in the community that is designed to appear official but is part of a scam.

According to authorities, the message mimics legitimate court documents and attempts to pressure recipients into taking immediate action, often directing them to a QR code to resolve an alleged violation.

Red flags:

  • Generic names (like “John Smith”)
  • Vague “Parking / Toll Violation” with no specific details
  • Urges you to act quickly or face penalties
  • Includes a QR code to “settle your balance”
  • No clear way to verify the case through an official court site

Do NOT:

  • Scan the QR code
  • Send payment
  • Provide personal information

Do:

  • Contact your local court directly using official contact information
